Optec - Energie Monitoring

Around the clock - well supplied since 1896.

Practical example - IBC Energie Wasser Chur

IBC was founded over 120 years ago, when the city of Chur merged the former electricity, gas and water supply companies into one company. This was groundbreaking at the time and still offers the best synergies today, as all plants are united under one roof. IBC Energie Wasser Chur, the only cross-linked company in Graubünden, is the competent partner for water, gas, energy and today also for e-mobility in the region.

IBC in Chur works around the clock to ensure its customers have a reliable supply of electricity, drinking water, gas energy and heat. 85 employees put their expertise, knowledge and experience at the service of customers with commitment and drive. As the most important utility company in the region, they develop and operate various energy solutions and are always at the forefront of new energy concepts on the market.

The demands on technical network infrastructures and personnel have steadily increased, the energy market has become more complex and customer needs more diverse.

This makes it all the more important that IBC knows its supply network and knows where and how much energy is needed. In order to visualize the energy flow even better, energy measurements had to be installed in all transformer stations. This project was started years ago and, after extensive research, the decision was made in favor of the UMG 605 from Optec.

Initially, 60 transformer stations were built, often with 2 or more devices per transformer in one station. After that, the devices were installed in the new distribution system when it was renovated or converted.

To ensure that the energy supply in the city of Chur remains at a high level in the future, IBC began construction of the Quader substation in 2017, which would replace the aging Untertor substation. The Quader substation was put into operation in October 2018. The impressive structure, with a construction volume of CHF 18 million, was built completely underground and is therefore barely noticeable to the public.

The UMG 512-PRO power quality analyzer measures all power quality parameters (e.g. OS up to 63rd, flicker, short-term interruptions, etc.) and also serves as a residual current monitoring device. The device also has a temperature input. Precisely this temperature input was a benefit for the IBC. It allows the room temperatures of the respective stations to be measured.
All information is recorded and transmitted in accordance with the current standards, EN 50160. The information can be called up in real time. IBC always has access to the latest data.

Our solution and the benefits for our customers

In the supply grid, 4 substations and around 200 transformer stations bring the energy to the low voltage level for distribution to customers. These substations each provide around a quarter of the energy supply for the city of Chur and are in operation for customers 24 hours a day.

A modern infrastructure needs modern metering systems. Optec has equipped the 3 IBC substations in the city of Chur with the latest and fastest UMG 512-PRO measuring devices. Here it is important to record and visualize the smallest transients and flickers. Thanks to a sampling speed and memory function for such events of 39us, IBC has one of the fastest devices on the market in the UMG 512-PRO.
